The Peripheral premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 21, 2022, and it has become one of the most watched shows on the streaming platform in recent weeks.
Executive produced and created by Scott Smith, the science fiction series is based on the 2014 novel by William Gibson, which is set in the future when technology has subtly altered society. The story follows Flynne (played by Chloë Grace Moretz), who discovers a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.
Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy also serve as executive producers for this mind-bending, time-twisting sci-fi series, which will have a total of eight episodes for its first season.
If you haven't started watching The Peripheral, here's a trailer to give you a taste:
While The Peripheral received mixed reviews from critics and fans, many sci-fi enthusiasts (like myself) are asking: "Is The Peripheral Season 2 happening at Prime Video?"

Everything Said So Far About The Peripheral Season 2
During an interview with Digital Trends, Jonathan Nolan was asked about The Peripheral Season 2, which is reportedly in development, and here's what he said:
"Scott Smith, who is our showrunner and an inimitable and brilliant writer, is currently working with the writer’s room. They’ve been working for several months now, looking ahead. It’s kind of fascinating to work on something like this, because [Gibson] was writing the next book in his series as Scott was working on the first season. But any project that contains multiple universes in which the same characters might do different things is such a fascinating and ripe candidate for adaptation. It’s very exciting to see where that story will take us, and we’re very much hoping that we get to go for another ride."
Clearly, there are plans to continue the story in another season as it sounds like Nolan is hopeful that The Peripheral Season 2 will happen, but as of early November 2022, Prime Video hasn't officially renewed the sci-fi series.
Speaking to ETimes, director Vincenzo Natali confirmed that Seasons 2 and 3 are in the cards: "This show follows a direct line. What is exciting is the prospect of what will happen in the second or third season. This is really a sea of something that can branch out and grow in any number of directions."
At the time of this writing, five episodes of The Peripheral Season 1 are now available to stream on Prime Video, with three more coming in the upcoming weeks.
As of November 11, The Peripheral is the #1 Prime Video series in the world, just next to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Note that we will update this article with more information once Prime Video and the creative minds behind the show shares more updates about it.
On December 21, Collider spoke with Amazon Studios' Head of Television Vernon Sanders and asked about the status of The Peripheral Season 2. He answered:
“We are in talks about Season 2 as we speak. We were thrilled to see real engagement and a lot of crossover from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ fans. So, it's kind of what we were hoping, that we were getting a bunch of people into the service for that show, and that they would go on to watch our next show. They're so different in tone, and obviously one's fantasy and one's sci-fi. We're incredibly proud of the producers of ‘The Peripheral.’ So I think there'll be news on that in the not-too-distant future. We're already hard at work on scripts for Season 2 and a plan for Season 2, so nothing to say officially right now, but we're deep into it.”
