On her second day of joining the convent, Sister Cecilia (played by Sydney Sweeney) discovers that she is pregnant. However, she swears that she is still a virgin and she never had a partner.

This made everyone at the convent believe that she was like Mary, an immaculate conception. As her pregnancy progresses, however, weird things start happening.

She later tries to escape but is apprehended.

Father Sal Tedeschi (played by Álvaro Morte) confesses to her that he used his knowledge of genetics to impregnate her. He used DNA found on an alleged crucifix used on Jesus in the hopes of creating a second Jesus Christ.

He had experimented on several other nuns before Sister Cecilia joined the convent.

After escaping the convent, Sister Cecilia's water breaks. She gives birth by herself and even cuts the umbilical cord with her teeth.

She finds a big rock and is presumed to have brought it down on the baby. Since the movie cuts to black, however, viewers are left to wonder whether she really pushed through with the act of killing her newborn.

The baby was a reminder of the horrors Sister Cecilia experienced at the convent. It was also the product of Father Sal's insanity, which Sister Cecilia did not want to have any remnant of.

After all, it's unclear what she gave birth to. It certainly wasn't normal.

As we've seen in other movies of the same genre, the newborn baby almost always appears to be evil. So is the newborn baby evil in Immaculate movie?

Throughout the film, it has been implied that there was something different about the baby and Sister Cecilia's pregnancy.

For starters, the newborn baby's cries and breathing sound more like a creature instead of a human child.

The film also doesn't show us what the baby looks like so we can only speculate what it was. But it certainly wasn't natural.

Since Father Sal was experimenting on DNA he obtained from the crucifix, it's possible that Sister Cecilia gave birth to a mutated child.

It wasn't a question of whether the baby was good or evil, it was simply because Sister Cecilia did not want the baby from the start.
