Two days ago, a TikTok went viral claiming that Spy x Family’s Anya had been sexualised through her interactions with her father Loid in the first episode.

Almost immediately, the anime community rallied in defence of the series. To the vast majority of people, the moment highlighted in the viral TikTok is as far from sexualisation as you can find, simply showing a happy father and daughter together.

Many people acknowledge that the initial TikTok comes from a baiting account that consistently posts unpopular opinions to try and go viral. However, as with many online trends, the discussion has gained momentum of its own.

There are so many people online criticising the idea of Spy x Family being cancelled that it’s actually almost impossible to find anyone suggesting that it might be!

No, fans can rest assured that Spy x Family is not getting cancelled. In fact, Spy x Family already looks set to be one of the most popular anime of the year.

The first episode received an excellent 3.1% rating, with the first episode trending in Japan and across the world. The series has already been lined up for two anime cours, although the exact number of episodes for Spy x Family is unconfirmed.

There is no suggestion that there will be any changes to the anime, based on the Spy x Family manga by Tatsuya Endou, following this viral moment. We also wouldn’t expect anything; anime producers very rarely react to feedback from outside of Japan, and many people expect this discussion to die down after a few days.

Spy x Family is produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks. New episodes air every Saturday. You can watch Spy x Family on Crunchyroll, or other platforms such as Netflix in specific regions.
