It has been nearly 15 years since the last season aired, and now Spice and Wolf is finally set to return. There is a question on many fans’ minds: is Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf a remake?
While it has taken over a decade since season 2, many are still hoping for the new anime to be a proper sequel. After all, the first two seasons of Spice and Wolf only covered up to volume 5 of the light novel.
Which Studio Is Producing the New Spice and Wolf Anime?
The first Spice and Wolf anime season was animated by Imagin, the studio behind shows such as Princess Resurrection and Sweet Reincarnation.
Meanwhile, season 2 was produced by Brain’s Base (of Baccano fame) and Marvy Jack (of Netflix’s Onmyoji).
For Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, yet another anime studio was tapped to handle animation duties. Working on the series is the anime studio Passione.
This studio is best known for animating popular titles such as Ishura, Yuri Is My Job, Love Flops, and The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy.
Even though there’s a new studio, the previous Spice and Wolf VAs are returning. These include Ami Koshimizu (Ryuko in Kill la Kill) as Holo and Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch in Code Geass) as Kraft Lawrence.

Is Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf a Remake?
While the previous VAs are returning, this new anime won’t be a continuation. When Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf was announced, it was confirmed that the anime would be a new adaptation.
Essentially, this new series will be a remake. More accurately though, it will be another adaptation of the light novel series. This likely means the new anime will mirror the original Spice and Wolf season 1 story-wise.
Fans hoping for a proper third season may be disappointed by this, but on the flip side, this should make the anime easy to get into for newer fans.

The first Spice and Wolf anime season covered the first two light novel volumes. Meanwhile, the second season covered volumes 3 and 5.
It’s not clear how long Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf will be. If it will get only 12 episodes, then it should mean the new anime will also cover the first two light novel volumes.
