Giving video games anime adaptations isn't always the best recipe to success, as Umineko no Naku koro would have you know. That being said, Scarlet Nexus does have its fans, despite its 6.2/10 rating on popular anime database MyAnimeList. So, is Scarlet Nexus based on a manga or light novel, and is it completed or ongoing?
Scarlet Nexus did not start from any manga or light novel. Anime adapted from visual novels, like the When They Cry horror series is not uncommon, but, instead, the anime by studio Sunrise is based on an action r0le-playing game and follows its plot rather closely.
In 2020 – once the not-so-far future, now a very apocalyptic past during which we saw many dystopian tropes unfold in front of us – humanity is plagued by Others. These mindless creatures feast on humans, making the creation of the Other Suppression Force a necessity.
But this is an alternate reality, where certain substances in human brains are associated with superpowers, and those who have them are naturally sought by OSF, as they might be helpful.
The game, which is played from a third-person perspective, gives the player the option to play as Yuito Sumeragi, who was rescued by the OSF as a child, idolized them, and eventually joined them, or Kasane Randall, an adoptee by a prestigious family and a talented OSF member. These two are also the main characters in the anime adaptation.
