  • Quick Answer: Danielle Cage, daughter of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, is a future Captain America in Marvel Comics and may eventually succeed Sam Wilson in the MCU.

Sam Wilson just became Captain America after Steve Rogers’ retirement in Avengers: Endgame, but Marvel may already be teasing his replacement in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

The Disney+ series may have only released three of its eight episodes so far, but they’re already packed with hints about what the future of the MCU could look like.

With the reveal that Jessica Jones is now a mother and knowing she has a child named Danielle Cage, whom she shares with Luke Cage, the show may be setting up a major comic book storyline. In Marvel Comics, Danielle eventually takes on the mantle of Captain America, so is the MCU already preparing to replace Sam Wilson?

Jessica Jones has yet to appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but a midseason trailer shows her confirming that she already has a child.

“They showed up at my house with my daughter there,” she said.

The child hasn’t appeared onscreen yet, and neither her name nor parentage has been revealed–but comic book readers already know who she is.

In the comics, Danielle has remained a child in the primary Earth-616 continuity, but her significance shines in the alternate timeline of Earth-15061.

Here, she inherits her parents’ superpowers–her father’s unbreakable skin and her mother’s superhuman strength. She also wields a thought-controlled, anti-gravity shield marked with Captain America’s signature star and stripes.

Danielle eventually becomes one of the heroes summoned to the future to end All-Father Ultron’s tyrannical reign, and she even visits the contemporary Marvel Universe in US Avengers #2–3.

As the future Captain America, Danielle interacts with present-day heroes and encounters multiple variants of herself who have assumed the mantle of Captain America across the multiverse.

With the MCU moving toward Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s possible that a version of Danielle as Captain America could appear on the big screen.

Her introduction in Daredevil: Born Again may set the stage for her to become a prominent hero in the Sacred Timeline–a new generation of legacy heroes taking up the mantle from Sam Wilson in the post-Multiverse Saga era.

In Marvel Comics, Danielle Cage’s origin is tied to some of the most significant Avengers runs, particularly when Luke Cage joined the New Avengers.

Jessica Jones gave birth to Danielle in The Pulse #14, a follow-up to the 2000s hit series Alias.

After Danielle’s birth, her father proposed to her mother, and the couple got married in New Avengers Annual #1, published in 2006. Danielle was named after Luke’s best friend, Danny Rand, better known as Iron Fist.

With Netflix’s Defenders Saga featuring a major time jump from Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again, the MCU has the opportunity to closely follow the comics in telling Danielle’s story

As Jessica Jones is set to return in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, the MCU may finally explore more about Danielle–especially since she has a major role to play in the franchise’s future.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 drops new episodes every Tuesday on Disney+.
