- Quick Answer: A sequel is planned, but director Curry Barker is focusing on other projects first, potentially turning the horror hit into a wish-based anthology series.
Director Curry Barker finally addresses whether there will be an Obsession 2 following the huge success of the first film.
Despite its $750,000 budget, Obsession has become a box office hit, earning both critical and commercial success with a whopping $290.3 million worldwide.
The positive reviews it has received prove that the supernatural psychological film is one of the standout horror movies of all time, managing to be cleverly disturbing and highly entertaining at the same time despite its creepy and uncomfortable premise. So, with this feat, is a sequel already in the works?
Will there be Obsession 2?

Being executive-produced by Jason Blum under Blumhouse, there are some concerns about a potential Obsession sequel due to the studio's mixed track record with follow-ups. Critics have often pointed to issues such as lower perceived quality compared to the original and the tendency to over-expand simple concepts, as seen with films like Sinister 2, Insidious: Chapter 2, and others.
Despite that, Curry Barker revealed that he already has ideas for how the story could continue. Before that happens, however, viewers may have a long wait ahead of them.
“I don’t want to go straight into Obsession 2. I have such a cool idea for it that I won’t say,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not saying it has to be five, six years from now. But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road. It’s a whirlwind and I’m trying to figure it out.”
True enough, it may take some time before Barker can begin work on an Obsession sequel, considering he already has a packed schedule.
In addition to the new movie Anything but Ghosts starring Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard, he also has several other projects in development, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
There are also reports that multiple studios are eager to work with Barker and are offering him carte blanche deals. As such, Obsession 2 may not be in the cards anytime soon.
How Could Curry Barker Create a Sequel for Obsession?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead. Read with caution
Bear (Michael Johnston)’s supernatural wish to the One Wish Willow has transformed Nikki’s (Inde Navarrette) love into a violent and obsessive fixation.
As the situation worsens and multiple people die, he learns that the only way to break the curse is for the wisher to die.
So, to free Nikki from the spell, Bear intentionally overdoses in the bathroom. As he changes his mind, he induces vomiting just as Nikki breaks the last One Wish Willow.
Bear then comes out of the bathroom and kisses Nikki before he dies. As Nikki prepares to shoot herself, the curse breaks, and she regains control of herself, ending up wailing hysterically after the carnage around her.
With this ending, it raises the question of how Currey Barker could make a sequel to Obsession.
“I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole. It’s something I don’t like to think about too much because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes,” he told Total Film. “It really doesn’t make any sense at all.”
So, as the first film appears to be a standalone story, the filmmaker is actually considering doing an “anthology, like a one-hour episode.”
“Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails,” he continued. “Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to give their spin on it. That would be really cool.”
