For people who are updated with the latest of the manga, we all know it's been quite a while since we've gotten a status update on Kugisaki Nobara. The latest one was in Chapter 144 when Itadori asked Fushiguro about her—but he only responded with a seemingly downcast expression. Yūji's eyes soften. Both of those panels were focusing on their eyes. That doesn't really give us much to work with.
So what happened? Is Nobara dead?
The Shibuya Incident Arc showed us that Nobara is strong enough of a sorcerer to be able to battle a special grade like Mahito. Her cursed technique is a great match for him. As Mahito puts it, Nobara is also his natural enemy.
In the events of Chapter 124 until 127, we witness a battle between Yūji, Nobara, and Mahito. At one point Mahito touches Nobara's face. After a flashback involving Nobara's younger years, we're shown with a panel of one of her eyeballs popping out of her head.
Tōdō and the younger Nitta arrive at the scene. With Nitta's technique, he heals Nobara. Either way, he assumes that she's probably dead but still says that it's not exactly a zero percent chance that she'll survive. He takes her with him and they retreat.
Numerous chapters later, we finally began a new arc—the Culling Game Arc. The latest chapter covers the Zenin family so until that part of the story is fully resolved, the focus may not shift to the other characters just yet. Hopefully, for the incoming chapters, we slowly get updates on the ones we haven't seen in a while.
In Chapter 148, there's a conversation between Megumi and Maki at a place that may or may not be a hospital. If you look closely at the start of their conversation, the sign behind Megumi says "general information". Could they have been visiting someone?
In a recent interview posted by Twitter user @soukatsu_, even Akutami-sensei is not sure about Nobara's status.
While we're not sure if they're just messing with us, nevertheless the whole situation is a mess for Nobara fans. I think that her character still has a lot to offer to the story so I'm wishing that she doesn't get killed off just yet. I'm already devastated over the thought of the first-year trio never meeting again.
