Is Marvel Comics Owned By Disney Explained

More than 30 Marvel films have been created since Blade hit our screens in 1998!

We've had 3 inceptions of Spider-man (more than 10 if you include Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse)

But why is it that we haven't seen The Fantastic Four team up with the X-men? How come Venom never made an appearance in Avengers Endgame if all the characters are Marvel characters?

In this article, we're going to explain the Disney/Marvel confusion and what this means for the Marvel Universe going forward.

Marvel Comics, formerly known as Marvel Publishing, was responsible for creating the iconic characters we love today, such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, and more and is owned by the parent company Marvel entertainment.

After the success of Iron Man in 2008, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 which included with it the ownership of Marvel Comics

Before the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel distributed some of its movie rights and characters to different studios. This includes:

Spider-Man

The right's to the Spider-Man franchises were bought by Sony pictures back in 1998. This included other characters that are well-known villains of Spiderman such as Venom, Black Cat, Morbius, and more all with upcoming films in the pipeline.

However, we did see Tom Hollands' Spider-man in the Captain America Civil War Movie, which showed the beginning of a Sony and Disney partnership.

It seems that even though different studios own the rights to these Marvel characters. Different studios can see the benefits of using Disney to tell their stories better.

All previously owned by 20th Century Fox, and what can we say…. They made a….mmmm good run at trying to make the films work?

The X-men Franchise did great (apart from the third movie which shall not be named).

The 2015 Fantastic Four movie is something most of us deny we ever saw.

But they absolutely crushed Deadpool!

However, in 2020, wonderful words were muttered….The X-Men are coming home.

That's right, in August 2020 Disney announced purchasing 20th Century Fox for $71.3 billion giving the full rights of these marvel characters back to Marvel Entertainment meaning they can now be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Could this mean a team-up even more epic than Avengers Endgame? Let us hope so!
