  • Quick Answer: Hellboy 3 won't happen because key creatives moved on, and the previous entries didn't generate enough "Marvel money" to force a studio-mandated sequel.

For nearly two decades, fans of Guillermo del Toro's dark fantasy blockbusters have held out hope for an official end to the original Hellboy saga. While the franchise has seen various reboots in the years since, the original storyline has remained completely up in the air. Breaking the long silence from the original cast, co-stars Ron Perlman and Doug Jones candidly addressed why the long-awaited Hellboy 3 will never see the light of day.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Hellboy star Doug Jones, who played the aquatic hero Abe Sapien in 2004's Hellboy and 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, breaks his silence on why the "ship may have sailed" on the long-hoped-for Hellboy 3.

"The Hellboy movies, we got to do one and two, but those were only four years apart. And talk to this day... the fans among that franchise are still like, 'Are we gonna get a Hellboy 3?'" Jones recalled, "Well, the last one was 2008. It's been a while. And there's been some reboots in the meantime. That ship may have sailed by now. And Ron Perlman and I would probably be the oldest superhero team in history."

Jones also echoed thoughts previously shared by lead actor Ron Perlman, noting that while the first two movies were incredibly well-received by fans, they did not make "Marvel money" (as Perlman said) at the box office, so Hollywood executives never thought to prioritize the third Hellboy film due to del Toro's ambitious budget requirements.

"People moved on," Jones said in regards to the multi-year delays, "Some of the creatives [moved on]."

To lead actor Perlman, it wasn't just the lack of passion on his end that brought the franchise to its last breath; he also considered that the time gap fizzled the momentum entirely. But he didn't fully cross out the possibility of reprising the titular role if it meant completing the fated trilogy.

What Hellboy 3 Would Have Been About, Pre-Cancellation

The cancellation of the trilogy is a particularly tough pill for fans to swallow, especially considering how massive the narrative setup was at the end of 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The franchise, after all, was building a grand, biblical climax that would have altered the main character's world forever.

According to Perlman, the third movie was fully designed to act as an epic conclusion to the "Greek oracle promises" of Hellboy's dark destiny. The story would have forced the demon to finally confront his true identity as the Beast of the Apocalypse.

To vanquish the film's central threat, Hellboy would be forced to fully embrace his apocalyptic nature, becoming a much darker figure to save humanity. On top of the looming end of the world, Perlman added that Hellboy could have been explored in his domestic side, as he and Liz Sherman (played by Selma Blair) prepared to raise their newborn twins.

Perlman noted that while he is unsure if a finished screenplay was ever completed, del Toro had perfectly mapped out the ending in his head: "[Hellboy wouldn't have] destroyed the Earth or saved the Earth, which is his oracle. The third movie was gonna have all that in it. It was gonna be the resolve."
