The final episode of Euphoria Season 3, titled “In God We Trust,” aired on May 31 and delivered an emotional conclusion that revealed Rue’s (Zendaya) fate.

Rue tried to escape escalating danger involving Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), but after a tense sequence of violence, she was ultimately fatally poisoned by fentanyl-laced pills.

Her death is later confirmed through a dreamlike sequence, and Ali subsequently discovers what happened.

Devastated, Ali falls into an emotional downward spiral and decides to seek revenge. He confronts and kills Alamo in a violent final showdown. The episode ends with Ali reflecting on Rue’s life and visiting a place connected to her memory.

In the final moments, Rue is seen at peace, suggesting a symbolic closure to her story.

“In terms of the story that we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me,” executive producer Sam Levinson said on The New York Times podcast Popcast.

Zendaya, meanwhile, said on The Drew Barrymore Show that she believed the series would end with Season 3 when asked about its future. “I think so. Yeah. Closure is coming!” she said.

Previously, Levinson told Variety that he approached every version of Euphoria “like it’s the last” and had “no plans” to continue the series at the moment.

“I want to finish this as strong as I can,” he said, adding that he was still putting the finishing touches on Episodes 7 and 8.

In fact, he said his goal for the season was to “deliver a… slam dunk season.”

Rue was not the only character who died in the Euphoria Season 3 finale. Episode 8 featured multiple major deaths, making it one of the series’ most devastating conclusions.

In addition to Rue, Laurie (Martha Kelly) died by suicide during a DEA raid on her compound. Alamo and G (Marshawn Lynch) also met their demise in the final sequence. Ali (Colman Domingo) killed G after storming Alamo’s strip club.

“I’m tired of losing people,” Ali said upon discovering Rue’s body. “The only thing I know for certain is that there’s a right and a wrong in this world–no in between.”

The ending also paid tribute to Angus Cloud, who passed away in 2023, by referencing Fezco’s escape from prison, with Rue attempting to find him before her overdose.

All three seasons of Euphoria are said to be streaming on HBO Max.
