Image's Saga to Take Year-Long Sabbatical

The ending of Saga #54, which is the most recent issue of the acclaimed Image Comics series, broke a lot of hearts. Not just because of the ending but the letter from Brian K. Vaughan that explained the series going on a year-long sabbatical. Admittedly, the series is no stranger to breaks like this so longtime fans probably weren't too surprised but it does suck that we will not be getting any Saga for a year.

Vaughan stated that he and artist Fiona Staples are dedicated to making this the best comic they can possibly make but they need this long break to recharge their batteries so that they can prepare for more of this epic adventure. Add the fact that Vaughan's Y The Last Man will be shooting soon and it seems like the writer will be busy for quite a bit.

"After fifty-four issues and over 1,200 consecutive pages of sequential storytelling together, Fiona and I have decided to take an extended break before we eventually reunite with Saga #55. And unlike our usual three months of 'Vacationanza' between arcs, we plan to pause publication of this series for at least the next year."
"This obviously wasn't a decision we took lightly, but Fiona and I feel a responsibility to keep making the very best comic we can, and we both agreed that he only way to eventually finish the epic saga we set out to tell was with this one significant... let's call it... Intermission!"

While the writer does mention the frequent breaks the series takes, usually only taking three or so months, this year-long intermission seems to be needed badly for both parties. It will be interesting to see what the two creators do while taking their break from Saga, though Vaughan probably has his new show to look forward to.

Saga is gone for a year. What will you read until then?
