The official spoilers for the next Magic: The Gathering set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, are coming in just a few weeks, and while we only know a few things about the upcoming "monster world" expansion, Wizards of the Coast hasn't revealed any new cards yet, so we still don't know what new mechanics Ikoria will introduce. However, Magic lead designer Mark Rosewater has teased that the set will have two crazy mechanics.
Over on his Blogatog, Rosewater shared a little story to whet a fan's appetite for the upcoming MTG set:
I'll share a little story with you to whet your appetite for Ikoria.
I return from the Throne of Eldraine stream where I first announced the existence of Ikoria (we shot it down in Los Angeles). Dave Humpherys, Ikoria's lead set designer, comes up to me and says, "So you announced Ikoria?"
"Yeah."
"You said that the set had a cool mechanic that was a bit out there. It was something that players would enjoy, but be a bit surprised we actually made."
"Yeah."
"Which mechanic were you taking about?"
You see, *two* mechanics in the set fit that description.
Rosewater previously said back in September that Ikoria will feature "one of the craziest mechanics we've made in quite a while." You can watch him talk about it in the 13:36 mark of the video below:
One of those new mechanics is speculated to be "Mutate", an official keyword teased in a card from Unsanctioned, the recently-released silver-bordered MTG set. Hearing Rosewater's confirmation of the two crazy mechanics for Ikoria is making me more excited for the set more. What do you think those two mechanics will do? Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths will officially be released on April 24, 2020. Prerelease events will take place from April 17-19.
