IDW's Sonic Comics Gets Familiar Writer To Pen New Adventures

This might surprise casual comic book fans, but the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise had a fairly successful comic book run in Archie Comics. Lasting over 300 issues, many were quite surprised when Sega stopped their 20 plus year relationship and moved the franchise to IDW. With that being said, fans will be happy to know that the new writer is actually series writer Ian Flynn.

During IDW's Sonic panel in New York Comic-Con, the company announced Flynn would be the writer for the series when it comes out next year. Debuting in April 2018, the first four issues will be launched weekly before settling on a monthly schedule. Having four new Sonic issues in one month is nice and should compensate for the long wait.

When asked if the new comics were connected to the previous continuity, IDW stated that this would be a reboot. This makes sense since the company will try to lure in new readers, though the news might disappoint fans of the previous comics. Having Flynn might soften the blow since he should be able to add familiar elements from his previous run while also forging a new path for Sonic and friends.

Sonic the Hedgehog #1 comes out on April 4, 2018. The next three issues will be released weekly before becoming a monthly series.
