Idris Elba Shares Worrying Update on Rumored James Bond Casting

Fans have been rallying for Idris Elba to play the next James Bond now that Daniel Craig has finally hung up the iconic tuxedo of the 007 Agent. However, the Suicide Squad star has constantly been ruling out his name from the potential James Bond actors list, claiming several times that he wasn't yet approached to play the role.

Now, in a recent interview on The Shop Podcast, Idris Elba admitted that playing James Bond isn't really something he is interested in:

"It is not a goal for my career. I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals. It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond,’ and I feel it is beyond me at this junction. It’s beyond me. You know, it’s not a question of, should I, do I, will I. It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes."

Despite the never-ending fan petitions, Elba remains grateful to fans who are considering him for the role:

"I’m not that guy, but in everyone’s world I might be. And that — job done, because the truth is, you know, a lot of people are really seeing Idris playing Bond as the ‘alternative Bond.’ And as long as that alternative is existing, that’s great for the growth of f---ing casting."

Who Will Be The Next James Bond?

In an interview with Deadline, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli revealed that it might take “at least two years“ before the franchise produces another 007 film and clarified that the search for the next actor who would replace Daniel Craig as the titular character hasn't yet begun. See her full quote below:

"Nobody's in the running. We're working out where to go with him, we're talking that through. There isn't a script and we can't come up with one until we decide how we're going to approach the next film because, really, it's a reinvention of Bond. We're reinventing who he is and that takes time. I'd say that filming is at least two years away."
