Idris Elba Reveals Which Character He Prefers to Play in James Gunn's DCU

As the DC universe heads in a new direction under its new leaders, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the franchise is set to make creative decisions such as dropping old actors to make more room for the new ones. Gunn’s management was previously under fire after allegedly firing Henry Cavill as Superman. Despite a few changes, there are rumors that some actors will remain in the DCU’s corner, like Aquaman star Jason Momoa, who is speculated to take on a new role. Given the DC fan's interest in seeing familiar faces, Idris Elba was asked by viewers whether he’d prefer to reprise his old role or be cast in a new one.

In a recent conversation with ComicBook.com, Elba answered that he'd prefer to continue his Bloodsport role from The Suicide Squad rather than gear up as a different hero. “More Bloodsport,” he said. “I love playing Bloodsport. He's a great character and hopefully, we'll see more of him.” The Luther star has previously hinted at his DC return when he revealed that he's “got a really big thing cooking for DC right now.”

Additionally, in May, Gunn gave a hint on Twitter that Elba's Bloodsport would return. The Guardians of the Galaxy director is currently working on other projects for DC, including a spinoff of the Suicide Squad with Viola Davis reprising her role as Waller. It hasn’t been confirmed if a Bloodsport spinoff is in Gunn's plans, but with the second slate of the DCU’s new offerings still waiting to be unveiled, Elba might have a chance to explore more of his hero’s narrative.

Idris Elba as Heimdall

Elba played Robert DuBois in the 2021 Suicide Squad, a master marksman who uses everything as a lethal weapon. Even though his future at DC remains a mystery, the British actor is booked and busy after he returned as Heimdall in Thor: Love and Thunder last summer, which is his sixth appearance as the Asgardian. This Friday, Elba suits up as John Luther for the first time since the BBC series ended in 2019.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is now streaming on Netflix.
