Hugo Weaving Says The Matrix 4 Director 'Pulled the Plug' on Agent Smith's Return

We already know that Agent Smith will not be returning in The Matrix 4 due to "scheduling conflicts." But is there another reason why the character will not be back in the highly anticipated sequel? Hugo Weaving has just confirmed that director Lana Wachowski had "pulled the plug" on the villain's return.

Weaving recently spoke to Coming Soon where he confirmed that he had met with Wachowski as well as former co-stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

"Lana Wachowski had rung me at the beginning of last year," Weaving said. "Lana was very keen for me to be involved in The Matrix. There was a reading with Keanu, Carrie and myself and a few others from the old family."

It sounds like things were already working well for the project. So why the sudden change in Agent Smith's involvement? According to Weaving, he already had previous commitments with the National Theatre but they ultimately worked a deal out. Unfortunately, Wachowski changed her mind at the last minute.

"Lana decided she didn't think it was going to work. So, she pulled the plug on the negotiations. That's where it ended up. She basically didn't feel that my commitment to the National Theatre was going to fit in with the dates that she had in mind for me," Weaving said.

It's unfortunate that we won't get to see Agent Smith in The Matrix 4. Let's just hope that Wachowski made the right choice in doing away with the character.

The Matrix 4 is currently scheduled for release on April 1, 2022.
