  • Quick Answer: Toy Story 5 addresses modern tech obsession as Bonnie gets a tablet, while a post-credits scene with Zurg strongly teases a sixth film.

Many have questioned Pixar’s decision to make another Toy Story movie after Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, which could have served as a conclusion and epilogue to the franchise.

But while some believe a fifth film is unnecessary, it may prove to be a natural fit within the franchise, continuing the themes that have been present since its beginning in 1995.

So how does Toy Story 5 fit into Pixar’s storytelling journey?

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 follows the arrival of Lilypad, a brand-new tablet in Bonnie’s life, making the other toys concerned not only about their place in her life but also about her becoming overly reliant on the digital device, exposing her to online negativity and isolating her from her toys.

Sure, this theme is relevant today with the rapid rise of new technology and children’s increasing use of it, but this concept has actually been present in Toy Story since the very beginning.

The “toys versus tech” theme was already introduced in the original Toy Story film with the arrival of Buzz Lightyear, representing the future of toys with his lights, sounds, lasers, pop-out wings, and other electronic features.

Compared to Woody, who only has a pull string and voice box, Buzz is more high-tech, quickly making him Andy’s new favorite.

Even the introduction of Pizza Planet reinforced this theme, showcasing how arcade games and claw machines capture children’s attention.

This continued in Toy Story 2, where a Buzz Lightyear video game is seen being played by Rex in Andy’s room.

Woody and the other toys are also sidelined due to the rise of space-themed toys like Buzz, reflecting shifting interests and trends.

Ultimately, Toy Story has always explored themes of new technology and change since its beginning more than two decades ago, and the fifth film continues that same idea.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story has a way of making each film feel like it could be the franchise’s conclusion, especially the third and fourth installments.

However, compared to its predecessors, Toy Story 5 breaks from tradition and appears to tease that another movie may be in development.

The film features a post-credit scene set in a schoolyard, where a child sits alone as a new Buzz Lightyear toy washes ashore and finds him.

More Buzz toys then appear, ending up in the playground as other children grab their own and begin to play.

But while the kids enjoy their newfound toys, another child pulls out Buzz’s nemesis, Emperor Zurg, from his backpack.

“We meet again, my son,” Zurg says, paying off an earlier gag in the movie where the real Buzz tells the other toys that Zurg is their father.

Lilypad is also seen performing a short rap in the end credits alongside some of the toys.

So while Pixar has yet to formally announce a sixth film, Toy Story 5’s cliffhanger strongly suggests that another installment may be on the way.

In fact, director Andrew Stanton previously revealed that he saw the new installment as the second in a trilogy.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he described Toy Story as the “end of the Andy years,” adding that they “got another trilogy with Bonnie.”

By the looks of it, if Toy Story 6 is made, it may serve as a finale to the toys’ time with Bonnie, similar to how Toy Story 3 concluded the Andy era.
