How to Fix Minecraft RTX Not Working

Minecraft's only true, official next-gen upgrade (in a sense), Minecraft RTX, released last year as an update to Minecraft Bedrock (and not Minecraft Java). All owners of NVIDIA RTX graphics cards now have the option to enable DLSS upscaling and ray-tracing in Minecraft on PC.

However, getting RTX to work can sometimes cause headaches, so in this article, we're going to explain how to get Minecraft's ray-tracing features up and running.

First off, make sure you've got the latest version ofMinecraft installed from the Microsoft Store. You can check for updates for your Microsoft apps within the Microsoft Store in just a couple of clicks. It's essential you have the correct version of Minecraft, because Minecraft Java on PC does not support ray-tracing and DLSS.

Once installed and up-to-date, in the graphics settings section within the game you'll see the option to toggle Upscaling and Ray-tracing on or off. The Upscaling option will enable DLSS, and Minecraft, unlike many other games with DLSS support, there are not different DLSS settings to choose from.

If you wish to upscale Minecraft from a different resolution, you'll have to change your display's resolution, because Minecraft's resolution automatically matches that of your display. Depending on what resolution you're running the game at, you'll upscale from different internal resolutions.

Both the Upscaling option and the Ray-tracing option, at first, will be grayed out, however. Many mistake this for a problem with Minecraft RTX, but the way the system works is that these settings are only available in RTX-enabled worlds, or in worlds with RTX-enabled Resource Packs loaded.

You can download RTX-enabled worlds directly from the Minecraft Marketplace, and you can find RTX-enabled resource packs direct from NVIDIA or online on sites that host MinecraftResource Packs. It's important you look for Resource Packs and not simply ‘mods' as Resource Packs are the Minecraft Bedrock (the version of Minecraft that supports ray-tracing) version of mods, where mods for Minecraft Java are usually just called mods.

Once you have your Resource Packs or a supported world setup, only then you can toggle on your desired RTX features in the graphics settings menu. Sometimes, the game can glitch and turn off ray-tracing when it's enabled. Use the semicolon key to toggle ray-tracing on and off within the game.

Occasionally, the game will refuse to load in the ray-tracing features when it's supposed to, and quitting to the main menu and reloading your world won't reset it. Quitting the game to the desktop or restarting your computer often fixes this temporary issue.

Lastly, make sure to order your Resource Packs so the wrong ones don't overwrite one another. Minecraft Resource Packs are loaded in a specific order, so if you notice glitches or issues with your ray-tracing setup, you might have an issue with the ordering of your packs.
