Like many other game developers, Mojang was hit by the Coronavirus hard, and as a result, the Minecraft creator had to delay what might be their biggest update yet, Caves and Cliffs. Though, while the Caves and Cliffs update looms, many are asking what's next for Minecraft?

With the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, people are also asking if Minecraft is going to get a next-gen upgrade, which likely isn't coming.

Caves and Cliffs is set to increase the world's height limit, allow players to dig far below Y level 0, introduce massive changes to world generation, and much more. Originally set to be Minecraft version 1.17, Caves and Cliffs was split into 1.17 (Caves) and 1.18 (Cliffs), making 1.19 the next major Minecraft update.

Minecraft 1.18 is scheduled for release in late 2021, originally being announced at Minecraft Live 2020 which took place in October of 2020. Now, Mojang is gearing up for Minecraft Live 2021, which is set to take place in late 2021, where the developer has announced they will talk about what's coming next to Minecraft after Cliffs.

Once 1.19 is announced, a release date for 1.19 in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock will likely land somewhere in Fall 2022 with a slew of Snapshots and information to come about the update beforehand, as is traditional for Minecraft updates.

Nothing has been confirmed about what's to come in 1.19 just yet, but if the Nether and Caves and Cliffs updates of the past few years are anything to go off of, the next Minecraft update is likely to address long-standing complaints about the game from fans.

Since the Nether has been overhauled and Caves and Cliffs are coming, the next major issue gamers have with Minecraft is its combat system, which works differently across Minecraft Java and Minecraft Bedrock but has also changed significantly over time. Many in the Minecraft community prefer to play on earlier versions of the game for the combat system in particular.

An update to Minecraft's combat has long since been promised, as well as hinted at in combat-related Snapshots over the years, and so has a parity update intended to bring the features of Minecraft Java and Minecraft Bedrock in line with each other. These are strong candidates for the next update, but for official confirmation, we'll have to wait and see.
