How Star Wars: The Last Jedi Brought The Porgs to Life

One of the many controversial elements found in Star Wars: The Last Jedi were the Porgs; adorable creatures that didn't really add much to the film but were a fun distraction. While they weren't annoying or derivative to the plot, many felt that their lack of importance made them a waste of time. Still, kids and certain fans love them, with LucasFilm and Disney selling a lot of merchandise based on these creatures.

Interestingly enough, the official Star Wars Twitter has decided to spotlight the Porgs, showing how they were brought to life. These cute critters were actually brought to life by puppeteers and some special effects. This makes sense and continues the modern Star Wars tradition of using practical effects when necessary.

Having the puppeteers control the actions of the Porgs made them feel more alive, which added to the movie's atmosphere. Obviously, there were moments when they were completely CGI but those parts couldn't be helped. Still, the fact that a lot of their movement was controlled by puppeteers is great and we can't wait to see what kind of practical effects will be in The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital stores. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is coming out this December.
