IT: Welcome to Derry’s eight-episode run concluded not with a definitive finale, but with an open-ended conclusion that strongly hinted at a potential Season 2.
The series made it clear that it was never intended to be a standalone, single-season story, punctuating its final moments with an IT: Welcome to Derry – Chapter One title card.
With this all but confirming that a second season is in the works, the question now is: how did the IT: Welcome to Derry finale set up the next chapter of the story?
What Will IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 be About?
Warning: Spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.

The new Losers’ Club in IT: Welcome to Derry has successfully vanquished It/Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), forcing the entity into hibernation for another 27 years.
General Shaw (James Remar) also gets what he deserved, bringing an end to what could have gone down as one of the US military’s most foolhardy missions in history. With these threads resolved, everything appears to fall back into place – quietly hinting at what is yet to come.
The series reinforces the idea that the killer clown experiences time nonlinearly. Pennywise knows neither a fixed beginning nor an end, and he is fully aware of both.
This perception of time deeply affects Marge (Matilda Lawler) and Lily (Clara Stack), believing It may have the ability to manipulate time and target those who will pose a threat to him in the future.
While a potential second season could explore Derry’s original Indigenous population – especially after Season 1 featured different periods in the town’s history, including Pennywise’s adoption of its clown form and its roots within this community – the next chapter may instead focus more closely on Marge and Lily’s suspicions.
Pennywise appears keenly aware that Marge will one day become the mother of Richie Tozier (played by Finn Wolfhard and Bill Hader in the It films), a key member of the Losers’ Club who ultimately helps defeat him.
If this is true, Pennywise is maybe terrorizing these specific children for a reason. He wants to kill the parents of the children who will eventually defeat him to prevent his own demise.
Will There be IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2?

So far, HBO has yet to officially renew IT: Welcome to Derry for Season 2. However, creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti (who also helmed the It films), alongside showrunner Jason Fuchs, have already planned the series to be a three-season story.
While the first season (Chapter One) is set in 1962, the planned second season is expected to move further back in time to 1935, exploring the Bradley Gang massacre storyline.
As the Muschiettis and Fuchs have said, the series was designed to unfold in reverse chronology. If this structure holds, a potential third season would travel even further into the past, revisiting 1908 and the devastating Ironworks Explosion
“We are basing the three seasons of this series on each of these catastrophic events," Andy said on Radio TU (via Bloody Disgusting). “There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908.”
With this long-term plan already in place, it appears to be only a matter of time before HBO officially announces IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2.
