Mel Schilling, who was a part of the iconic Married at First Sight reality TV show as a dating coach, has died of cancer at the age of 54, as her husband said on an Instagram post using her profile.
Schilling, who had been a part of the reality TV show cast since 2016, was diagnosed in December 2023 and said earlier this month that the disease had already spread to her brain.
She "passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love," her husband Gareth wrote in a statement, "To most of you, she was Mel Schilling - matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate."
Schilling first joined MAFS in Australia, then later on the UK version of the show. She stepped down from the Australian version last month after running for 12 seasons, due to her health.
Gareth added that Mel used "all of her remaining strength" in her final moments to whisper a message for her daughter Maddie and him, "that will sustain me for the rest of my life." Even then, "her only thought was for Maddie and me," he said.
The Timeline of Mel Schilling's Battle Leading Up to Her Death

Schilling first revealed her terminal colon cancer diagnosis in December 2023, when she shared on her Instagram post that this was "after a tumour the size of a lemon was discovered during a scan. 'Terry,' as I called him, was successfully removed, and I was initially given the all clear."
A couple of months later, she learned that the cancer had returned, despite undergoing "16 rounds of chemotherapy," and was told she was eligible for a "groundbreaking clinical trial specific to my gene type" in March 2026.
Over Christmas, however, Mel began having "blinding headaches" and "numbness down my right side." The cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team informed her that there was "nothing further they could do."
The most that Schilling could say was, "I honestly don't know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people."
Channel 4 opened its program to share a touching tribute to the deceased dating expert. "All of us at Channel 4 are incredibly saddened by the news of Mel's death."
"We're privileged to be the channel that is home to Mel's work, which was at the heart of Married at First Sight's phenomenal success, both in the UK and Australia," the statement continued, "For many who work for Channel 4, Mel was not just a colleague, but a friend, someone who radiated joy, warmth and optimism, who energized every room she walked into with humor and positivity. Everyone who knew her will miss all this about her and much more."
