Nolan's biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer was released in 2023 and became the mark for premiering alongside Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie.

Oppenheimer took home seven Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. Apart from its stellar reviews that helped the film climb to the top of the Academy Awards of 2024, Murphy revealed that Nolan gave him one subtle yet pivotal note that secured his Oscar right in the bag.

According to a recent interview with Jake's Takes, Murphy had played one scene a bit too aggressively, which led the helmer to say, "He's not a boxer. He's a chess player."

"I've made six films with Chris, and he's a generational director. We all know that. One of the greatest directors ever," Murphy said, "I remember very early on, when I was playing Oppenheimer, I came in a bit heavy with one of the takes. And he said to me, 'He's not a boxer. He's a chess player.'"

Murphy added that after that one whispered note, it 'changed' the entire scene for the better.

"And he hadn't said anything up until that point, and then he said that, and it just clarified everything and everything became clear," the Peaky Blinders star continued, "It just changed the whole way I approached the take. He's so gifted, it's outrageous."

What's Next on Christopher Nolan's Roster? Adapting the 8th-Century Epic

After Nolan's greatest hits with Memento (2000), Inception (2010), and Dunkirk (2017), what could be next on one of the best Oscar-winning directors out there? Well, as of writing, Nolan's next biggest venture is taking The Odyssey adaptation under his wing.

Last year, before the holiday season came around, Universal unveiled Nolan's latest project, which was to be around the epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey.

"Christopher Nolan's next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology," the studio announced on December 23 last year, "The film brings Homer's foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time."

Some of the A-list actors who will be co-starring in the epic project are Matt Damon, Spider-Man star Tom Holland, and his recent fiancée Zendaya, some of Nolan's previous collaborators like Anne Hathaway, MCU stars Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron, to mention a few.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey is slated to release on July 17, 2026. Stay tuned!
