There is little doubt that House of the Dragon viewers were divided when Aemond Targaryen claimed Vhagar as his own. Although most fans were furious that the prince had claimed a dragon intended for Laena Targaryen's daughter, others believed it was a moment that Aemond deserved after years of wanting his own dragon.

So did Aemond truly deserve to claim Vhagar? Ewan Mitchell has spoken up about the connection between his character and the dragon, and he claims it is much deeper than the show suggests.

Ewan Mitchell recently spoke to The Face where he discussed his favorite plot point in House of the Dragon. Not surprisingly, it involved Aemond Targaryen.

"I just enjoyed reading the script for the first time and meeting this neglected, friendless, bullied boy who really never found a place in the family. It’s almost like a Lynne Ramsay film in that he was never really there," Mitchell said. "Even in Episodes 6 and 7, he’s almost a wraith-like presence, floating between his family members."

He then pointed out how Aemond was different from his siblings. "It’s tradition in Targaryen culture to place a dragon egg in the cradle of a newborn, which establishes a bond between the rider and the mount. There’s this dynamic that as the person grows, so does the hatchling," Mitchell said. "For whatever reason, Aemond was denied that; he was always on the back foot."

He continued by stating how Aemond connected with Vhagar.

"He’s able to identify with this dragon Vhagar, the oldest, grumpiest, biggest dragon. She’s named after the old Valyrian God of War and she’s a hardened survivor of over 100 battles," Mitchell said. "She’s enormous but also the loneliest. She’s so big she can’t fit within the confines of any castle wall, like Aemond. He doesn’t fit it anywhere, and so he identifies with her."

Ewan Mitchell is set to return as Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 2. However, the second season has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
