HBO has finally released the official teaser trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3, with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen poised to claim the Iron Throne.

Fans can expect an all-out war as Rhaenyra moves to take control of King’s Landing from the Greens. However, victory won’t come easily–every move comes with a high cost, and major deaths are likely on the horizon.

From Rhaenyra’s emotional breakdown to the escalating battles between the Blacks and the Greens, here’s a full breakdown of the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer.

A Dragon in the Vale

Around the six-second mark, a dragon soars above the craggy mountains of the Vale of Arryn. While its identity remains unclear, it’s worth noting that Rhaena Targaryen previously learned of an untamed dragon roaming the Vale from Jeyne Arryn in Season 2.

In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the source material for the series, a lowborn dragonseed named Nettles bonds with a wild dragon called Sheepstealer.

After fighting for Daemon Targaryen and Team Black during the Dance of the Dragons, the pair eventually retreats to the mountains of the Vale.

Given that Rhaenyra Targaryen currently lacks a dragon and has a strong presence in the Vale, it’s possible she may attempt to claim this mysterious creature.

The Battle of the Gullet

House of the Dragon Season 2 ended with a major tease of the Battle of the Gullet, which is set to be one of the largest conflicts to come

Located in the waters of the Crownlands, between Driftmark, Dragonstone, and Massey's Hook, the Gullet is where House Velaryon has enforced a naval blockade of King’s Landing on behalf of Rhaenyra.

Tyland Lannister is expected to attempt to break that blockade with the support of the Triarchy’s fleet, which could lead to a devastating battle and potentially major character deaths.

Why Does Rhaenyra Cry?

Rhaenyra

Rhaenyra is seen crying in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer, clutching herself as she tries to hold it together.

Tragically, her eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, is expected to die during the Battle of the Gullet after a crossbow strike brings down his dragon, Vermax.

In Fire & Blood, Jace is set ablaze by arrows before his body sinks into the sea.

However, the trailer hints at a possible change for the show, most notably with the image of a skull placed before Rhaenyra, suggesting his fate may be portrayed differently on screen.

James Norton joins House of the Dragon Season 3 as Ormund Hightower. While he has limited presence in Fire & Blood, he plays a key role in major events as the commander of the Reach’s forces.

This includes the arrival of Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent Hightower, alongside his dragon, Tessarion, as they enter the war.

Lord Cregan Stark Joins the War

After Jacaerys Velaryon convinces Cregan Stark to join the war, the Stark lord finally appears in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer as part of the Winter Wolves contingent.

Cregan initially couldn’t send troops south, as winter was approaching in the North. However, things have now changed, allowing him to lead a group of fierce warriors into the conflict. By the looks of it, he and his men will play a larger role in the battles ahead.

The Battle at Harrenhal

The Battle at Harrenhal

Harrenhal appears twice in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer. In one scene, Daemon Targaryen, clad in full armor, battles two Green knights. In another, Aemond Targaryen is seen prowling through a moss-covered hallway with his sword drawn.

Based on these moments, Harrenhal may fall into Aemond’s hands this season. If that happens, it sets the stage for a potential battle between Aemond and Daemon, making a confrontation between them feel inevitable.

However, it remains to be seen whether it will occur early in the season or closer to the finale.

Helaena Targaryen Giving Birth

A brief glimpse of a blonde woman in childbirth suggests that Helaena Targaryen may be about to become a mother again.

While this could potentially be a hallucination experienced by Aemond, it’s also possible that Helaena was already pregnant in Season 2 and is now giving birth in House of the Dragon Season 3.

Helaena and her husband, Aegon II Targaryen, already have three children: Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Maelor. However, Maelor has yet to appear in the series, meaning this moment could mark his long-awaited introduction.

House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to release on June 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
