HBO is once again cashing in on the popularity of the Game of Thrones television series by exploring the rich history of the House Targaryen in the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon. The series will take place 300 years before the original Thrones series and will chronicle the Targaryens in their full might, during the time when they were still ruling the seven kingdoms.

Production for the project is already underway with filming already kickstarting a couple of weeks ago. Set photos and clips actually leaked online last week but they didn't really give that much away. Now, we're getting a glimpse of the main characters of the show. HBO just released the first official images for House of the Dragon featuring Emma D'Arcy and Matt Smith as Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as The Sea Snake, and Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans as Alicent and Otto Hightower. The cultural impact of Game of Thrones cannot be denied and it set the bar real extremely high for the fantasy series genre. Now, while House of the Dragon is looking promising so far, it can't be denied that the series has huge shoes to fill, and being able to surpass the success of GOT will be a tough task for sure. But considering how loyal the fandom is to the entire series, it's almost safe to say that the project will be greeted by everyone with open arms.

House of the Dragon is expected to hit HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.
