Space Battleship Yamato is celebrating a major milestone this year. To mark this occasion, Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno was tapped to produce an upcoming Space Battleship Yamato 50th anniversary project.

Anno’s involvement was announced by studio Khara on Saturday via its official website. While there are not a lot of details about Anno’s specific project, info about upcoming parts of the overall project was revealed.

There are still some sci-fi anime being released every season, but the genre’s heyday was no doubt during the 70s. Among the most influential titles from that time is Space Battleship Yamato.

The series was co-created by legendary artist Leiji Matsumoto. Its first anime season aired from October 1974 to March 1975.

Since then, the series has gotten a wide variety of projects, including a manga adaptation and many anime films and series from studios such as Satelight (of Helck and Cherry Magic fame).

Even though it’s no longer as big as it once was, the franchise continues to get new projects.

One of the most notable ones in recent years is Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, which aired in the spring and summer seasons of 2013.

This show then received a sequel titled Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202, an anime film series released in 2017.

Then in October 2021, the first of a two-part film series titled Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2205 was released in Japanese cinemas. Part 2 then got a theatrical run in February 2022.

Later this year, a new project in the franchise will be released, and it is being produced by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In the announcement by Khara, it was confirmed that Anno is in charge of planning the project to celebrate Yamato’s 50th anniversary.

For now, the confirmed anniversary events include a special screening on October 6, as well as exhibitions that will open in various parts of Japan.

Aside from the screening and exhibitions, there’s no word yet on other plans for the anniversary celebration.

Given that Khara announced some of the plans, an anime project may be made, though it probably won’t be a proper anime film or series, given that there’s only half a year to make one.

Instead, it’s more likely that if an anime were to be made, it would just be a short to commemorate the franchise’s anniversary.
