Hidden Figures Star Octavia Spencer Buying Out A Black Panther Screening For Underserved Children

Black Panther's making its way to the big screen next, next week and it looks like Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer wants to make sure that children in an "underserved community" in Mississippi get a chance to watch the upcoming comic book movie.

Not only is Black Panther important because it's Marvel's first standalone film for Chadwick Boseman's T'challa, but it matters a lot to African-American audiences because it's Marvel's very first all-black superhero movie.

Now Spencer wants to make sure a few underserved children get to "see themselves" as a superhero. Taking to Instagram, the Hidden Figures actress posted a poster of Black Panther and then announced her plans to buy out an entire theater so that she could have a free screening blocked so that a batch of children can get to see the film.

"I will be in MS when this movie opens. I think I will buy out a theatre in an underserved community there to ensure that all our brown children can see themselves as a superhero. I will let you know where and when Mississippi. Stay tuned. #KingsAndQueensWillRise #blackpanthermovie"

This might not be the first time Spencer's held a free screening (she also did one in Los Angeles for her 2016 film Hidden Figures), but it is certainly a lovely gesture. Representation is an important issue, and it's great that Spencer wants to give black children the chance to see themselves in a superhero film.

Black Panther premieres on February 16, 2018.
