Here’s Why Transformers: The Last Knight Almost Didn’t Happen

The Transformers has had a divisive fan base. On one hand, it seems to have seen improvements in storyline development since its first run. However, with the upcoming installation, Transformers: The Last Knight, it does feel like it has extended its welcome past the standard threequel.

Interestingly, the movie almost didn't happen, according to an interview with director Michael Bay via ComicBook.com. The director revealed the moment when he had almost walked away, and what had happened that prevented that:

"I was going to walk away from this franchise, I proposed to Paramount, I said listen, ‘Every time we do one of these movies we have to roll the rock back up the hill ad we need a real writers room; we put them through Transformers school; we locked them in a room for about a month at Paramount with 10,000 images from the franchise surrounded by props and life-size Bumblebee, it just stared them in the face. They came up with a complete bible from the beginning of time until way deep into history and came up with great stories."

Bay and Steven Spielberg had picked out two stories from the bunch that they felt were fresh for the franchise. Not only that, it was also a new take on the idea of being a hero in a world where the known Autobot hero, Optimus Prime, is gone.

One other instance where Bay had said a firm "no" to what was happening was when he was asked to shoot and post-convert the reel. Instead, he had opted to shoot in real 3D, which also introduced the idea of a true, real, IMAX 3D movie.

Whether or not this makes for a groundbreaking movie compared to the last few ones remain to be seen. What we can all agree on is the fact that Bay will be forever dedicated to his craft.

Transformers: The Last Knight will be out in theaters on June 23.
