Here's Why Captain Marvel Didn't Give Carol a Love Interest

Captain Marvel was a lot of things; a solid superhero movie, a positive feminist message for boys and girls, and another chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One thing it wasn't was a love story, which surprised a lot of people since most of the solo/origin MCU films had some sort of romantic angle in them (Tony and Pepper/Thor and Jane/Steve and Peggy), so not seeing one here was quite the surprise.

Then again, as Kevin Feige stated to ScreenRant, it wouldn't have fit with the story they were telling. Since the film was about Carol regaining her memories and realizing what she stood for, adding some sort of love interest could have hurt the film.

I mean, does anyone remember how they tried to cram in a love story in Doctor Strange? That didn't work. And Ant-Man did such a poor job of foreshadowing the romance there that they ended up making it a joke (which was actually pretty funny).

"Well that was something as we were developing the script and queuing off of the comics as always, it never even occurred to have a love interest. That's not what the movie was about. It was about Carol finding herself and growing and making mistakes and being bolstered up by her female mentors and female friends. And that relationship with Maria was very important."

Fans are currently shipping Carol with either Thor or Valkyrie in Avengers: Endgame, especially after that most recent trailer. In the comics, Carol had a few love interests in the comics, such as the original male Mar-Vell, James Rhodes aka War Machine, and Simon Williams who operates as Wonder Man. She also went on a date with Spider-Man once but they ended up just staying friends.

Avengers: Endgame comes out on April 26. Captain Marvel might still be showing in theaters.
