Here’s the Story Behind the Marvel Studios Logo Change

For fans who have been watching Marvel movies, there was a big change in January 2016—and that was the beginning of the project that will change the logo for the movie franchise.

The story behind this redesign was revealed by Perception Studio, which was approached by Marvel in a collaborative attempt to produce the animated logo that will be the trademark for movies to come.

There was a very solid background and concept that guided the creation process, one that was open but also propelled by Kevin Feige's request:

"To combine the brand and the iconic characters into a single image, showcasing the heroes within the letterforms of the MARVEL logo. Otherwise, we were asked to approach this as a new chapter in the ever expanding story of Marvel Studios, and the new logo and animation needed to make that statement."

To do this, Perception had taken cues from the brand's past while also looking towards its future. This meant diving deep into different concepts, with the chosen one being the idea of building an entire universe from the origins of the comic book pages to one that is uniquely Marvel Studios.

Parts of the process touched on the comics as foundation, the script that had been the product of screenwriters' efforts, concept art alluding to the production crew, the directors, cast, and crew in the film, and finally the entire Marvel universe.

The team even made use of the artworks and concept art of different heroes, from 2D made into 3D.

In the same manner, Perception also shared that the team had to redesign and rebrand Marvel Studios' logo to the one we see in the simple yet striking balance between the two words. Of the many sample studies, there's something about the mirror typecast and very balanced arrangement of the Marvel Studios logo that gives it the justice and weight it deserves as an entity of its own.
