The DC Extended Universe's Aquaman sits closer to its release date now that we're at the second half of 2018 and it looks like Warner Brothers has begun the marketing campaign for the watery superhero standalone.

Not only has Entertainment Weekly given a bunch of new photos featuring Jason Momoa's Atlantean King, the entertainment news outlet also offers fans their very first look at Aquaman's nemesis, Black Manta.

Played by The Get Down actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Black Manta is a sly high-seas pirate and assassin named David Kane. In the new photo released by Entertainment Weekly, fans get to see David Kane working on a prototype of the super-suit that he wears in the comics. Though we can't be sure whether the DCEU's going to adopt the same features of the suit, Black Manta's costume actually blasts out red plasma beams from its eyes.

Right now there isn't that much information about Black Manta and the role he's going to play, but that's exactly what Aquaman director James Wan is gunning for.

"He's part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space," Wan tells the publication.

What's more interesting about the character though is that Manta isn't being promoted as the main antagonist of the film – instead the big bad of Aquaman is Patrick Wilson's King Orm, Aquaman's half-brother.

We wonder what kind of twists and surprises Aquaman is going to bring.

Aquaman premieres December 21.
