Here’s How Many Marvel Characters You’ll Likely See in Avengers: Infinity War and Why

The two-part Avengers: Infinity War movies will undoubtedly be the biggest entries to the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the sheer number of Marvel characters who are expected to appear in the films. It begs the question of exactly how many characters directors Joe and Anthony Russo plan to feature in the films.

The Russo brothers did previously tease that as many as 67 people could appear in the films.

The basis?

According to Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely at the recent Captain America: Civil War junket in Los Angeles (via Cinema Blend), they came up with the number after writing down literally every last Marvel character who "could conceivably be alive."

Below are their exact words:

Stephen McFeely: There was a moment where Chris and I, on the set [of Captain America: Civil War], so we signed the deal in April or May or something and then immediately went to Atlanta. And we had every character.
Christopher Markus: We had an office with a bulletin board. Wrote down every last person who could conceivably be alive and, you know, more or less in the same dimension.

Stephen McFeely: So, that's a very big number, when the brothers say 75, that's about right… I think we took them in the office and they went [makes muttering sound].

The number doesn't constitute characters only from the past though. The writers confirmed that the movies will also be introducing characters never before seen in the MCU.

Markus said:

There are characters integral to telling that story, most of them have at least been touched on, but you need to bring a few in. The evolution of the MCU is going to be bringing people in that we need to bring in.

What they didn't confirm is whether Marvel TV characters would make appearances in the films. Both McFeely and Marcus simply said "No comment." The "no comment" comment may not be a confirmation, but it is an encouraging comment nonetheless.

The Avengers: Infinity War movies will be the zenith of everything that has happened since the first MCU film was released in 2008, and looking at the sheer number of characters set to appear in the movies, it will be intriguing to find out how the writers will be able to connect their stories into each other.

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 hits theaters on May 4, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 will be released a year after on May 3, 2019.
