- Quick Answer: Writer Mike Flanagan teased a positive development on Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40K series, finding a unique, character-driven entry point into the vast universe.
Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K series has finally received a promising update from writer Mike Flanagan after being officially announced in 2022.
Flanagan, best known for his horror works in Carrie and The Haunting of Hill House, joined the project in July 2026, with Cavill attached as its lead star and executive producer.
After several years in development, will fans finally see Warhammer 40K make its way to the small screen soon?
What Did Mike Flanagan Say About the Warhammer 40K Series?

Warhammer 40K is the world's most popular miniature wargame, particularly famous in the UK, and has spawned numerous spin-off media.
Considering that this is quite different from what Mike Flanagan is used to working on, he admitted the biggest challenge is getting the series off the ground, as its dense mythology isn't easy to crack.
“All I can say is that Warhammer is a fascinating world. The challenge, as anyone familiar with it knows, is finding a way in – it’s so big,” he told Deadline. “There are 700 novels, discounting the (tabletop) game, the interactive elements and so much of the rest of the lore.”
After the game debuted in 1987, Games Workshop began publishing background literature to expand its universe, introducing new stories that explore its characters, events, and extensive lore in greater detail.
The franchise has continued to expand, with different authors contributing works across various formats and media, including audio, digital, and print. These include full-length novels, novellas, short stories, graphic novels, and audio dramas, all forming part of the franchise's extensive literary collection.
Despite its massive lore, Flanagan revealed that the series has a “very cool and unexpected on-ramp into it, which I think is very exciting.”
What to Expect From the Warhammer 40K Series?

Set in the distant future, Warhammer 40K centers on a stagnant human civilization plagued by dangerous aliens and supernatural creatures.
It features a world populated by humans, aliens, and supernatural monsters wielding futuristic weaponry and supernatural powers.
However, based on Mike Flanagan’s statement, it looks like the show will not jump straight into an all-out war with Space Marines bashing each other. Instead, it may feature a “very cool and unexpected” entry point for viewers to better understand its universe despite its massive lore.
This may mean the series will focus on tighter, more character-driven perspectives, such as that of an Imperial Inquisitor like Gregor Eisenhorn, to prevent newcomers from being overwhelmed by a sprawling, galactic-scale war right away.
Knowing Flanagan’s horror background, coupled with Henry Cavill’s deep knowledge of the source material, the series may lean into the dark, gothic, and brutal atmosphere of the 41st millennium.
“I’m sworn to secrecy on all of (Warhammer), but I’m having the time of my life working on it,” Flanagan teased.
Amazon MGM Studios is developing the series, and it doesn't have a release date or a production start date at the moment.
