Hellboy Reboot Sequel Was Supposed To Include Redesigned Abe Sapien

Neil Marshall's Hellboy movie might have ended up becoming a pretty big commercial flop, but if the movie had found a bit of success, then fans would have actually gotten to see a redesigned version of Abe Sapien in the film's sequel.

Hellboy teased the appearance of Abe Sapien during its very final scene with the BPRD raiding a lab only to discover a container with the amphibious humanoid. Though fans only got to see the hand of the character up against the glass, everyone already knew that Hellboy was teasing the future appearance of Abe Sapien.

Speaking in an interview with Comic Book Movie, Hellboy makeup artist Joel Harlow opened up about plans for Abe, saying that the character wasn't just set for a role in the reboot's sequel but that he would have a completely different design when he appeared in the film.

"The unfortunate thing is that the movie did not do very well and if it had, we would have explored Abe Sapien again," said Harlow. "There were actually a lot of creatures coming in potential sequels. For this one, we get a glimpse at him at the very end with that teaser with his hand but if we had done the entire character, first of all, it would be vastly different from the other films, more thug-like, and we wouldn't have even have gone with that hand you see at the end of the film. We would have designed something from scratch. That's one of the ones that, because I have an affection for fish people and fish characters, would have been really fun to work on but alas, no."

It's just like Marshall to want to keep things fresh, even the design for Abe Sapien. Many of the featured characters and creatures in the director's Hellboy reboot looked nothing like the versions that Guillermo del Toro made in his first two Hellboy movies – they were much grittier actually. It really shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that the creative team wanted to redesign Abe.

Such a shame we may never get to see what he would have looked like in Hellboy 2.
