HBO Showrunner Praises The Last of Us Ahead Its Release: “Greatest Video Game Story Ever”

Many avid video game fans are skeptical when it comes to adapting their favorites onto streaming platforms, however, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us seems to be one of the rare exceptions to the case. Seeing as the casting choice shown in the most recent character posters, along with the promotional videos showcasing game-accurate scenes, fans are highly anticipating Pedro Pascual’s Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie to appear on screen next year.

Recently speaking with Empire, HBO’s Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin adds his praises to The Last of Us TV Series ahead of its release, declaring it ‘the greatest video game story’ he has ever read in a long time, considering that the characters feel like ‘real people.’ Check out Mazin’s full comment below:

“It’s an open-and-shut case: this is the greatest story that has ever been told in video games.” Mazin says, “They didn’t shoot anything out of their eyeballs, they were just people. And that, in and of itself, is remarkably rare in games. The fact that they kept it so grounded, and really made you feel — I had never experienced anything like it, and I’ve been playing video games since 1977.”

Mazin previously discussed with The Last of Us (2013) writer and creative director Neil Druckmann, how the show could potentially show some of the bits that did not make it into the final cut of the game itself, which Mazin promises ‘will blow your mind’ especially if the viewer has not yet played the game themselves.

Considering that The Last of Us Part II dominated the Game Awards back in 2021 over The Witcher 3 and had been receiving praise from the likes of the Russo Brothers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is no doubt that this adaptation would only further enhance the project and its storyline to its audiences.

The Last of Us arrives on HBO Max on January 15, 2023.
