HBO Max Unveils First Look on Aquaman: King of Atlantis Animated Series

HBO Max has finally released the first image for its new animated series on Aquaman: King of Atlantis. The image was revealed as part of HBO Max's virtual Television Critics Association junket on Wednesday, February 17. The screenshot appeared showing Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman together with Mera, preparing to fight someone.

Based on the image, it is quite unclear who the couple will be fighting off against. The animated series has a very unique art style, which is quite a different take on Mera and Aquaman. The first look at the characters suggests that the animated series will provide a more comical side of the Justice League member.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be a three-part animated mini-series. It follows Arthur as he works on the first days of his role as Atlantis' ruler. Mera will serve as his adviser together with his right-hand man Vulko. Aquaman will have to deal with corrupted surface dwellers, threats from underwater creators, and the fight against his half-brother Orm, who wants to have the throne for himself.

James Wan and his Atomic Monster production company will be producing the Aquaman: King of Atlantis. Mary Halpern-Graser and Victor Courtright will serve as the showrunners and co-executive producers of the animated mini-series. The show was previously announced in January 2020. At that time, Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max's Head of Original Content said that the Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be a great addition to the company's slate of shows.

As of the moment, there is no official announcement regarding the release date of the animated series. Meanwhile, the live-action Aquaman 2 will be released on December 16, 2022.
