The golden age of television is far from over as varied franchises continue to release spinoff series and mini-series over the years, and one of them happens to be Game of Thrones featuring their prequel series on HBO, House of the Dragon. Its first season had been a huge hit on the streaming site, which didn’t come as a shocker, considering how Game of Thrones built its history on HBO, and due to this, it earned a rightful second season for the series.
House of the Dragon Season 2 has yet to receive its official release date, however, as per Deadline, an HBO spokesperson had already confirmed that Season 2 will run a shorter mile from its first season. House of the Dragon Season 1 ran with a total of 10 episodes, whereas House of the Dragon Season 2 is now coming with only 8 episodes, 2 episodes short from its previous run.
As for House of the Dragon Season 2’s release date update, Deadline reports that the eight-episode season will “likely” be scheduled to premiere in summer 2024, as production is soon about to begin.

The shortened House of the Dragon Season 2 may come to a shocker for some, however, in Game of Thrones, each season ran for a total of 10 episodes before they had eventually shortened it by Season 7 (only comprising of 7 episodes) and Season 8 with an even shorter length (a total of 6 episodes).
As to why Season 2 will only contain 8 episodes, it remains unclear as of writing, but it is worth mentioning that previously, the creative team for HOTD had envisioned the series running for at least three to four seasons, which could explain one of the aspects that affected cutting the season down.
For now, House of the Dragon Season 2 is set for a likely premiere in summer 2024.
