HBO Drops Emmy Promo for Watchmen

You couldn't find a more faithful adaptation to the Watchmen comic than Zack Snyder's 2009 film, but next month will see showrunner Damon Lindelof's attempt to write a sequel to the original comic with a Watchmen television show. Just in, HBO has dropped the Emmy promo for the series.

It's basically a shortened version of the last trailer for Watchmen, and it focuses more on Regina King's character Sister Night. The video does come with the description Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?, the original Latin phrase which translates to "Who Watches the Watchmen?"

Though I thought the Comic-Con trailer was the most exciting preview to date, the later promos do give us a lot more meat on the plot and characters. We know that the cops have been forced to wear masks because the Seventh Cavalry (a.k.a. the Rorschach cult) has been targeting the police and their families. We also find out that the character of Looking Glass is a police interrogator, and there are also several visual nods to the comics.

I think the show looks fantastic, and after Lindelof's work on The Leftovers, I'm excited about what kind of story he has to tell in this new world of Watchmen.

Set in an alternate universe where 'superheroes' are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground on its own.

Catch HBO's Watchmen when it premieres Oct. 20.
