Hayao Miyazaki might be working hard on his latest Studio Ghibli film after returning from retirement, but it looks like there's going to be a lot of uncertainty surrounding How Do You Live's release. Though the film was expected to debut sometime next year, a new interview with Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki reveals that the studio has changed the terms for How Do You Live?. Now, there is no deadline for the film.

Speaking in an interview of the April issue of the magazine Bungei Shunju (via Geek Tyrant), Suzuki reveals how the studio has started experimenting with the production of How Do You Live?, lifting the film's established deadline.

"With the production of this new film, we're experimenting with having no established deadline. I'm looking forward to how that comes through in the work," the producer explained.

For those who haven't been following the news surrounding the project, How Do You Live? will be an adaptation of the 1937 story by Yoshino Genzaburo.

The film will focus on the journey of a middle school boy named Honda Junichi. Honda lives quiet a quiet life. He comes to learn more about adolescence and growing up while exchanging letters with his uncle. The two soon grow and learn from one another. Though Honda grows tired of his everyday life, his uncle's words of wisdom challenges Honda into doing more with the life he has than what has come to be expected.

It's exciting to imagine what Miyazaki has in store for everyone, though this uncertainty is unsettling. Hopefully we get to have updates from time to time.
