Hawkeye Star Jeremy Renner was Almost Max in Mad Max: Fury Road

It's hard to imagine anybody other than Tom Hardy playing the titular role in Mad Max: Fury Road. However, it looks like Max Rockatansky was almost played by a Marvel Cinematic Universe star. A new report reveals that Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner was being considered for the lead role in the George Miller film.

In The New York Times' oral history of Fury Road, Zoe Kravitz confirmed that she met the Avengers: Endgame actor before the movie started production. This was during the time that Uma Thurman was still being considered for the role of Furiosa and Hardy has not been brought in for the project.

"I did a chemistry test with Jeremy Renner reading for Max because they hadn't hired Tom yet," Kravitz revealed.

It's no surprise that Renner was thought to be an excellent choice as Max. At that time, he had just appeared in the first Avengers film and has already proven that he is a promising action star with movies like The Bourne Legacy and Hansel and Gretel. However, Miller ultimately went with Hardy because the Venom star had the same charisma and depth as a young Mel Gibson.

Although he never got to play Max, Renner went on to continue playing Clint Barton in the MCU flicks. He is now expected to reprise his role in the upcoming Hawkeye series that will also introduce the character's protege Kate Bishop.
