Hawkeye: Freefall Pits the Avenging Archer Against...Ronin?!

Marvel has unveiled some new comics for January 2020 and it looks like they're aiming high with a new Hawkeye series. The Avenging Archer stars in a new series called Hawkeye: Freefall, written by Uncanny X-Men writer Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Green Arrow artist Otto Schmidt, with Sentry illustrator Kim Jacinto providing the first cover. This is going to be fairly intriguing since Clint Barton will go one-on-one with a new Ronin.

It's a shame this is all happening while Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner could be getting #cancelled but that's what you get for being a crappy person. Anyway…

This new comic looks like it's going to be a mini-series - I mean, why would they add the subtitle Freefall if it were an ongoing? - which isn't a bad thing. While fans might yearn for the days of a Hawkeye ongoing ala Marvel NOW, there's nothing wrong with a short and concise story.

Here's a synopsis for the first issue:

When a mysterious and ruthless new Ronin starts tearing a destructive path through the city, suspicion immediately falls on Hawkeye, but Clint has more to worry about than who's wearing his old costume. After a clash with the Hood ends badly, Hawkeye gives himself a new mission that will place him in the crosshairs of one of New York's most dangerous villains.

Fans like myself find it odd that they would release something Ronin-related after the release of Avengers: Endgame since that movie hyped up Clint's other persona really well. Still, coming from a writer like Rosenberg, this could be a lot of fun and could even lead to a new Hawkeye series. We'll just have to wait and see.

Hawkeye: Freefall comes out in January 2020.
