Harry Potter Reboot Fuels War Against Percy Jackson Fans

Some people can be fans of many franchises at the same time, but other fans prefer to focus just on one and tend to compete with the other ones out there, like how Marvel maniacs and DCU diehards are always in rivalry with one another. Similarly, the fantasy genre has Harry Potter and Percy Jackson fandoms in contention, and with the recent news that each of their franchises will have its reboot, both fan bases are back to matching wits against each other.

In May 2020, Disney+ announced that a Percy Jackson series is in development, and they are working with Rick Riordan to adapt his original fantasy novels. Two months ago, the production wrapped filming, and it’s been reported that the series is eyeing an early 2024 release. Meanwhile, in December, a Harry Potter reboot was first announced, and a new report emerged saying that the said reboot is inclined to produce an all-new Harry Potter television series with a brand-new cast. According to Bloomberg, the show will have each of its seasons focus on one of the seven Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling.

Given the recent news regarding the Harry Potter series, Percy Jackson fans took the opportunity to point out that it was their Camp Half-Blood Chronicles who first announced a television counterpart, and Harry Potter just copied and pasted their move. “[Percy Jackson] did it first,” one user wrote, with another quipping that the series “washes Harry Potter in every possible category.”

Given the particular timing, some fans remarked that Potter executives "saw Percy Jackson getting ready... and had to come up with something quick." Other fans are more assertive in their criticism, sharing Harry Potter spoilers and writing that "no one cares" about a return to Hogwarts. For a counterattack, HP fans argue that "Percy Jackson needed a reboot because the films were trash, [while] Harry Potter did not."

Titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the Percy Jackson reboot will have Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz as showrunners and feature a cast that includes Walker Scobell as the titular demigod son, Jason Gray-Stanford, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri. The series will reportedly remain faithful to its source material. Meanwhile, if the Harry Potter reboot is not another false alarm, it would add to an increasing catalog of Hogwarts-adjacent spinoffs, following the Fantastic Beasts series, which ran from 2016 to 2022.
