Harry Potter: Newly Released Letters Reveal Alan Rickman’s Frustrations with Playing Snape

The world mourned when Alan Rickman died back in 2016, but he lives on forever in the memorable characters that he's left behind. The Independent recently got a hold of some letters to (and from) Rickman, and they reveal that he went through some frustration when it came to playing Severus Snape.

Rickman had penned a note titled Inside Snape's Head to which he talks about his irritation on how Snape was handled in The Half-Blood Prince. Rickman wrote:

"It's as if David Yates has decided that this is not important in the scheme of things i.e. teen audience appeal."

Rickman also received a letter from producer David Heyman who thanked him for his work on Chamber of Secrets, despite frustrations:

"Thank you for making HP2 a success… I know, at times, you are frustrated but please know that you are an integral part of the films. And you are brilliant."

A letter from author J.K. Rowling herself also thanks Rickman for "doing justice to my most complex character."

Though Rickman may have had his frustrations when it came to playing Snape, he was no doubt very beloved by the fanbase—especially when the time came to reveal the biggest twists about his character. If anything, he also played a lot more fun characters besides the greasy-haired Potions master.

Alan Rickman may be dead, but his legacy lives on in cinema.
