The second season of DC Universe animated series Harley Quinn premiered on Friday, which continues Harley's story as she lives in a Batman-free Gotham. The first season mainly focused on the character dealing with her breakup with the Joker. However, over the course of the first season, Harley and Poison Ivy had formed a tight bond. Now, it looks like their relationship will take quite a turn in the latest season.

In a recent interview with Newsarama, showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern talk about the characters' budding romance. "It's steered towards a romantic relationship in the second season, that was always part of the plan," Schumacker confirmed. "We wanted to make sure that the first season was just focused on Harley extricating herself from her relationship from the Joker, going out on her own, very focused on the career, very focused on rising up through the ranks of Gotham's criminal underbelly." They thought that if Harley jumped right ahead into another relationship, it might "file the teeth off of Harley's other drive."

Schumacker said they already knew that once Harley has figured out that part of her identity, they would want to explore her relationship with Poison Ivy, as well as the "complexities" of it, and to find "overt ways" in exploring this in animation. "It's definitely the payoff for the end of the season. It's the big focus of the end of the season," he said. "But along the way shit happens. They do stuff."

Halpern added that they tried to "play with the reality" of what the situation would be like when you realize you're in love with your best friend. "It's messy, it takes a while, and it's not smooth at all," he said. "And there are definitely a lot of two steps forward, one step back kind of thing going on."

New episodes of Harley Quinn Season 2 air every Friday.
