Hackers Stole Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher Source Codes Threatening CD Projekt to Give in to Ransom Demands

CD Projekt Red, the developer behind popular games Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher revealed to be a victim of a cyberattack. The perpetrator/s are requesting an unspecified ransom from the attacker.
CD Projekt revealed that they discovered that they became a target of a cyberattack, which was because of some of their internal systems being compromised.

The developer went on to say that an unidentified actor gained unauthorized access to their internal network, collected data belonging to the CD Projekt capital group, and left a ransom note. For information's sake, a ‘threat actor' is a term used for an individual or group of individuals that attempt or conduct malicious activities against companies.

The aforementioned ransom note was made public by CD Projekt Red. The note specifies that the full copies of the source codes for The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and the unreleased version of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game were obtained by the hackers. The threat actor also obtained some internal company information. The hacker/s threatened the game developer that they will either sell or leak what they have obtained if the company will not come to an agreement.

The hacker only gave CD Projekt Red to respond within 48 hours. However, the company has no plans of yielding to the hackers. CD Projekt Red said that they will not give in to the demands or negotiate anything with the threat actor, even though they are aware that this may lead to the release of compromised data.

CD Projekt Red added that they are doing necessary steps to mitigate any of the consequences of the leak or release, particularly approaching any parties that may have been affected due to the data breach.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on Xbox One, Playstation4, Google Stadia, and PC.
