Guillermo del Toro will Direct a Marvel Movie Under One Condition

Guillermo del Toro may have put the Hellboy franchise behind him, but that doesn't mean that he's done with superhero movies. As it turns out, del Toro is even eager to join the MCU for a film—given only one condition.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about del Toro eventually doing an MCU movie, del Toro says he would only be into it if the lead character was a monster. Del Toro joked, "I'm not interested in superheroes that aren't monsters. I'm not interested in anyone who looks good."

After del Toro won all the awards for The Shape of Water last year, he made it very known to audiences that his specialty will always be on monsters and creatures in film. It shined with his work on Hellboy, and it shined with his other films like Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth as well.

For now del Toro is working on his first animated feature which will be an adaptation of the classic Pinocchio story. However, it's not going to be your classic Disney story, but rather a political movie about "a puppet during the rise of fascism."

The story is said to take place in 1930s Italy, and del Toro compares his Pinocchio character to Frankenstein's monster saying, "He's a creature that is created through unnatural means from a father that he then distances [himself] from, and has to learn about failure and pain and loneliness."

With del Toro's status, I wouldn't imagine him wanting to rub shoulders with the Marvel directors, but I would very much be eager to see what he could bring to the table. Who knows, if Doctor Strange 2 doesn't pan out (which I hope it doesn't), maybe del Toro can take over for the third movie?

No release date has been announced for del Toro's animated Pinocchio movie.
