Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Nabs Higher Opening Weekend Box Office Than Expected

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally out in theaters worldwide and MCU fans are finally witnessing the titular team's final adventure in the iteration that we've known since their debut in 2014. So far, the critical and audience reception has been mostly positive.

After the underwhelming box office performance of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, there is a lot of hope that the James Gunn threequel will turn things around again and perform around the same numbers as the other successful MCU films during the pandemic era.

Now, we have the final results of the opening weekend box office of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in North America and it looks like Marvel Studios will be taking a big win as it was able to gross more than $118 million according to Deadline.

The film took the number one spot at the box office charts and its gross surpassed the expectations of box office analysts as they projected it to earn $110 million prior to the weekend.

When the box office results on Thursday and Friday performed better than initially expected, the forecast grew to $116 million and the final numbers managed to even surpass it a little bit further thanks to the $31 million ticket sales on Sunday.

Given that the film has an overwhelmingly positive audience score and an impressive CinemaScore of A, it is not surprising at this point that this film managed to win its opening weekend box office and it sounds like word-of-mouth spread about its quality to the wider general audience.

Now, all eyes are on its box office legs in the coming weeks and it would be interesting to see whether they will be able to consistently attract more moviegoers until the next big tentpole film arrives.

At this stage, there is a huge potential that the film will be able to have a successful run at the box office considering the record it received today and the audience reception.

This is also a great sign for the MCU since the numbers counter the "superhero fatigue" argument and, despite the franchise's recent setbacks and the different moviegoing climate due to the pandemic, it sounds like the audience is still in to watch their favorite MCU heroes on the big screen.
