Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: Chris Pratt Addresses Star-Lord's Surprising Ending

WARNING: The article contains spoilers about the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Read at your own risk.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the last MCU movie featuring the current iteration of the titular team that we first met in the 2014 film. Fortunately, the threequel ended with a happy ending as none of the members died and it was a satisfying sendoff for their run in the franchise.

However, one of the surprising decisions that James Gunn made regarding the heroes' fate is when Peter Quill/Star-Lord decided to leave the team and go back to Earth to reunite with his grandfather.

During the global press conference for the film (via The Direct), Chris Pratt addressed his character's fate and explained why it was the fitting end for the former Guardians leader at the end of the movie.

"There's a wonderful monologue that [Dave] Bautista gives that, you know, comes from Mantis, that Quill is a guy who needs to learn how to swim. He's been hopping from lily pad to lily pad, woman to woman, and relationship to relationship," he said.

"I think that's a pretty human condition. I think, oftentimes, we find ourselves in our relationships or in the affiliations we have with a team or a family or whatever. And he has been lost."

The actor discussed that Quill has always been running away ever since we first met him at the beginning of the trilogy, but it was a "B.S." move in the end.

"So, yeah, in the beginning, he was running away from the death of his mother, but he got to pretend to be this character based on these pop culture icons of his childhood of the late-'80s. And so, he was dancing around, but all of that was, really he had found himself there. But it was kinda B.S., you know?" he continued.

Pratt went on talk about his character's journey and the growth that he had throughout his run in the trilogy.

He added, "And then he found himself with the Guardians of the Galaxy. And then he thought he could find himself with who his father was."

"So, he's a guy who's constantly been searching for who he is. And then he found it again in his relationship with Gamora."

The actor concluded, "And so, when [the version of himself he found with Gamora]'s stripped away from him, he's a guy who's realizing that all of these various people that he's found that are Quill, none of them have been the real him. And so, he is, he's lost. And that probably does mean that he's sad."

It was really surprising to see Quill give up his heroic adventure and decide to go back to his roots. However, the way presented it really worked and, if you stayed until the very end of the credits, we also know that this film is not the last time that we'll see him in the MCU.
